Pink FLUORITE from the Huanzala mine has appeared sporadically for years, but in 2010 a pocket was struck that produced crystals in a size and quality which eclipsed all previous output from the mine. This is the same pocket that produced spectacular specimens of huebnerite and quartz, and which set a new standard for Peruvian huebnerite. There was a good quantity of pink fluorite in this pocket, but unlike this piece, most of the pieces were massive or nearly unrecognizable as crystals. The pink color in fluorite is probably due to the presence of a tiny percentage of iron in the molecular structure. The iron is referred to as a chromophore, a term used to describe the ions of certain elements which are highly absorptive of selected wavelengths of light, thus causing the distinctive colors of certain minerals. I purchased this piece at the Tucson Gem, Rock and Mineral Show from a French wholesale dealer who bought almost the entire contents of the pocket when it was first opened. He high-graded this piece and set it aside, unveiling it this year for the first time.
