Here is an outstanding specimen of the rare mineral BIXBYITE, with 2 crystals that are very good for the species exposed on an off-white rhyolite matrix. This piece was found in the Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah - arguably the #1 locality in the world for bixbyite. The bixbyite crystals are colored a dark grayish-black, with very good, metallic, mirror-like luster. The crystals feature beveled edges, which are most likely a sign of twinning, adding interesting geometrical variations to the specimen. The crystals sit up on on a matrix of rhyolite, a form of volcanic tuff in the same family as obsidian. I found this top quality specimen at the Tucson Gem Rock and Mineral Show this year on the display of a dealer who buys them direct from the miner.
