This is a choice specimen of NATURAL RUBY (CORUNDUM) from an unnamed locality in the San Jacinto Mountains, Riverside County, California. The 4" crystal is double-terminated, and IS colored a dark red color.

First discovered in 1924, this locality produced crystals to about 2". In 1939, material from the locality was brought to UCLA for study. Decades later, in 1980, Ken and Dana Gochenour worked several localities which produced crystals to 4". In 1999 the Gochenours did more collecting, finding unbroken crystals to 7". That appears to be the last time the sites were worked.
