Liddicoatite tourmaline crystals form unique nested triangles inside that are only revealed when they are sliced and polished. The typical form for these is a series of triangles, each slightly smaller than the previous one, with color variations that demark the portion of each triangle that is visible.  On this specimen the colors include several shades each of pink, blue, yellow, dark green, light green and yellow.  The edges between the triangles are extremely sharp, and the slice has been beautifully polished on both sides to reveal the internal patterns.  This exceptionally aesthetic slice of liddicoatite, a rare precious variety of gem tourmaline, was cut from a huge, thick liddicoatite crystal with a fascinating history. It was unearthed in Madagascar in 1948, made its way to the U.S. to the Smithsonian, disappeared for over three decades, and was rediscovered in 2011.
