This is a treasured classic: a superb specimen of SMOKY QUARTZ with AMAZONITE (microcline) from the Smoky Hawk Claim in Florissant's Crystal Peak area, Teller Co., Colorado. I purchased this fine specimen from Joe Dorris at the Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show.

We have known Joe Dorris for years, since we first started attending the Tucson show in 2001. This year he was accompanied by his son Tim and daughter Crystal, who grew up mining the Smoky Hawk. Joe has been mining this claim since he first first opened it in 2000. It has produced the finest smoky/amazonite combinations the world has ever seen. The stark black of the smoky quartz stands out in sharp contrast with the vivid turquoise blue of the amazonite. This year I was able to purchase a good-sized lot of specimens from Joe, including some really lovely combination pieces and some richly colored amazonites as well. Only about 0.5% of specimens are un-repaired, the result of the weak bonds between the amazonite and the quartz.
