When out in Tucson in February, I really flipped when I spotted this specimen of agatized PETRIFIED WOOD that comes from the Petrified Wood Forest in the Antsirabe Region, Antananarivo, Madagascar. from the Antisirabe Region, Antananarivo, Madagascar. It is a Cretaceous Era fossil (about 96 million years old) of the auraucaria tree. I don't usually go for fossils, but this one was too intriguing to pass up. It is a whole log taken from a tree that has been petrified: that means the original wood cells have been replaced by rock - in this case, silica (quartz), with the impurities from the original wood and other minerals present giving the piece beautiful coloration.
