Named for its host country, and rare in discrete crystals elsewhere, AFGHANITE in WHITE MARBLE from Sar-e-Sang, Kotchka Valley, Badakshan Province, Afghanistan is the best in the world for the species. I purchased this piece from an Afghani dealer who brought a few of these rare specimens to the Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show.

In the late 1990s, the legendary lapis lazuli (lazurite) occurrence at Sar-e-Sang, Afghanistan, has produced "peculiar" specimens containing large, relatively sharp lazurite and sodalite crystals in white marble. Associated with these, though much rarer, are exceptional crystals of afghanite, a mineral that was only formally described as a new species in the late 1960s.
