This is a specimen of biotite mica that is the iron-rich, dark brownish black cousin of muscovite mica. This piece is crystallized in a sharp "book" of thin sheets, layered one atop another in "slices" that can be split apart easily. The mineral name biotite is now discredited by the AMA, but it continues to be used as a group name for other minerals including phlogopite, annite, siderophyllite, and eastonite.
