Biotite mica is the iron-rich analog of clear muscovite mica.  Like muscovite, thin sheets can be peeled off as layers, and the thinner the layer the greater its transparency. Biotite is a common rock-forming mineral, and is especially noted in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss.  The mineral name biotite is now discredited by the AMA, but it continues to be used as a group name for other minerals including phlogopite, annite, siderophyllite, and eastonite. This is a superb example of this popular mineral.
