A friend of mine lives on Hell Hill in southern New Hampshire, where he collected this specimen of sillimanite. It is an alumino-silicate mineral with the chemical formula Al2SiO5, and was named for the American mineralogist Benjamin Silliman (1779 to1864). The crystals on this piece are pale blue, up to 1" in length, and sit on a schist matrix which is weathered so the crystals stand out in relief.
