From Madagascar comes this amazing fossil oyster, of the species Rastellum carinatum. The unusual ribbed formation gave it the nickname "cockscomb oyster" (it is also known as denture clam). The zig-zag join between the two shells stopped coarse dirt and debris entering the shell and damaging its soft body. Like modern oysters it lived in shallow coastal waters including the zone between high and low tide and fed on food particles that it filtered out of the sea water. The fossil oysters collected at this locality are found in limestone from the upper Cretaceous period, making them about 70 MYO.
