Here is an outstanding specimen of the rare mineral BIXBYITE, sitting on a white rhyolite matrix. The bixbyite crystals are for the species, and are a shiny, metallic silver-gray color. The specimen was found in the Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah - which many consider to be the premiere locality for bixbyite anywhere in the world. The bixbyite crystal is equant (i.e., all its axes are the same length), quite lustrous, and very sharply formed. It is perched upon a matrix of rhyolite, along with several small topaz crystals. The beveled edges, which are most likely a sign of twinning, add interesting geometrical variations to the specimen. I purchased this at the Tucson Show this year from a dealer who had several flats to choose from, all bought direct from the miner.
