Biotite is a variety of mica that is the iron-rich analog of clear muscovite mica.  Like muscovite, thin sheets can be peeled off as layers. Biotite is a common rock-forming mineral, and is especially noted in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss.  The mineral name biotite is now discredited by the AMA, but it continues to be used as a group name for other minerals including phlogopite, annite, siderophyllite, and eastonite. This specimen is dark black with a touch of brown, is very shiny, and is a superb example of this popular mineral.
