DESCRIPTION

Here is an excellent specimen of the very rare mineral KINOITE, with clear, colorless, prismatic APOPHYLLITE crystals. The color on this specimen is a lovely DARK ROYAL BLUE and the micro crytals are SHARPLY FORMED. This specimen comes from the best known locality for kinoite - CHRISTMAS MINE, CHRISTMAS, GILA CO., ARIZONA(now closed). This is a NEW ARRIVAL which we picked up at the TUCSON GEM & MINERAL SHOW this year from a local dealer/miner. He pulled this specimen out a few years ago during a collecitng trip. This is the deepest blue color I have yet seen in a crystallized kinoite, ever. At first, I didn't even recognize it as such because of the deep azure tone whereas the material is more often a pastel hue. It is a gorgeous specimen which looks like blue glitter was prinkled on the rock artifically, but it is legit! For the color saturation and overall beauty, this is truly significant and rare. It has relatively large crystals for the species and locale, to over one mm. Also, its a relatively large piece for this top quality style, and also has the small apophyllites.

Kinoite was named for the Italian Jesuit missionary and explorer Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645-1711). He established many Catholic missions in the Southwest, including a mission near Tucson in 1700, the Mission San Xavier del Bac. Kinoite is a rather scarce mineral and is only found in a few locations around the world in association with other copper (Cu) minerals. Many of the finest specimens come from the Christmas Mine in Gila County, Arizona. Kinoite crystals are generally very small and may form crusts of tiny crystals on matrix. Kinoite is often a light to medium pure blue color (occasionally dark), different from most other copper minerals which are either turquoise to greenish blue, or varying shades of green. Individual crystals of kinoite may be a bit darker, more of a medium royal blue color. Depending on the crystal formation, it has a Mohs' hardness of 2.5 to 5 (crusts to individual crystals). Kinoite is transparent to translucent and has a blue streak when scraped on an unglazed ceramic plate. Kinoite crystals from the Christmas Mine are often half-coated or entirely coated by fluorapophyllite. Less commonly encountered uncoated crystals such as these offer a delightful variety of habits. It is somewhat scarce. It has a monoclinic crystal system, vitreous luster, and is transparent to translucent. It can be found in the Dripping SPrings and Santa Rita Mountains and the Christmas Mine in Arizona and a few copper mines. This classic Arizona locality has been closed since 1977, when the mine closed. Collecting is strictly prohibited and enforced. Kinoite is no longer being found anywhere in the quality and quantity of the classic specimens from the Christmas Mine. If you want to learn more about the mine, here's a link to a great article on the amazing history of the town of Christmas, AZ.
