This specimen of golden RUTILE and metallic HEMATITE comes from Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil. This configuration is actually very unusual, and is described by mineralogists as rutile growing epitaxially on hematite. The contrast in these specimens between the black, metallic, mirror-bright, hematite and the lustrous and shiny gold acicular rutile crystals is quite dazzling. We purchased this specimen from one of the Brazilian dealers who was set up at the annual Tucson Gem, Rock & Mineral Show.
This lovely specimen of rutile on hematite features brilliant golden rutile needles growing directly out of a core of silvery gray hematite. This unusual formation is called epitactic, as in "a rutile epitactic overgrowth on hematite." I call them sunbursts, because the golden crystal radiating outward look just like rays of sunshine shooting out from behind a dark gray cloud.
