This large, gorgeous cluster of smoky golden CITRINE QUARTZ crystals comes from the Sapucaia Mine in Galileia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The smoky yellow color is the result of the radiation of colorless quartz while the crystal is still forming in a semi aqueous solution, and the presence of iron, sodium, and/or aluminum in its composition. At higher temperatures, smoky quartz loses its color, and first turns yellow (citrine), then white (milky). This one came out of a pocket opened during the 2011 mining season, a pocket which produced some exceptionally fine specimens. I acquired this aesthetic specimen from a Brazilian wholesale dealer at the Denver Gem, Rock & Mineral Show.
Here is a very large, spectacular cluster of 100% natural smoky citrine quartz crystals. The color is a gorgeous, deep smoky yellow when backlit, and each crystal also contains a large, sharp "phantom" inside, marking an earlier stage of the crystal's growth.
