Here is a specimen of the native element graphite that is very slippery to the touch (some say greasy), which is probably why graphite makes such an effective lubricant.  The color is a slightly lustrous silvery gray, and this section of a graphite vein has been squeezed into tightly curled folds by the metamorphic forces that helped create it. Oh, and yes, it does write like a pencil. There are some almandine garnets embedded in the graphite on one side, plus a small amount of matrix, which is a coarse mica schist.
