Here is a sliced, polished slab cut from a rhodochrosite stalactite. The rhodochrosite is bright pink and is the end of a stalactite that once grew from the ceiling of the mine. The stalactite shows clear multiple ring-growth patterns in cross section. The rhodochrosite is red and pink, and there are also zinc sulfate-enriched layers that are brown and tan. The site was mined by the Incas, who believed that rhodochrosite was the blood of their ancestors, thus the color name "Inca rose".  The mine was closed in the early 2000s.
