This is a hollow tube of fulgurite, the name for the naturally formed tubes that are created when lightning strikes sand in the desert or other areas. The heat of the lightning (roughly 53,500 degrees F) melted the quartz-rich sand, which cooled around the strike to form the characteristic tubular shape of this strange mineral. You can look right down the middle of this tube. No damage.
